Data Overview 2025

Yeah, I skipped 2024. So this will cover updates from the last 24 months.

First, the overview:

  • Non-OTU
    • Relegated Muarne & Lancask sectors to Turokan's Rim Expedition (map now has newer versions c/o Mark Humphreys)
    • Moved Holowon to "far away"

I'm going to be lazy and not linkify all of the above.

As far as T5SS progress goes:
  • Afawahisa, Beyond, Gateway, Touchstone, and Vanguard Reaches were promoted from "In Review" to "Official"
  • Zhiensh, Lubbock, Kruse and Xuanzang sectors in new/forthcoming books are "Unreviewed"
  • Lots and lots of tweaks to sectors in various "Official"/"In Review" stats, since nothing is every truly final.
Here's an overview - red = "Official", orange = "Unreviewed" or "In Review", green = "Preserve"

T5SS:

These sectors appeared in recent publications. They've been "In
Review" for years and we can still tweak them.

Also, add a handful of sector names from the Rim Expeditions books.

Data Overview 2023

Greetings Travellers!

I missed last year, so this covers everything back to January 2021.

  • OTU updates:
    • Location of Kusyu in Dark Nebula updated to ensure it's in Kilrai' subsector.
    • Far Frontiers tweaks - in anticipation of an upcoming Mongoose supplement.
    • Storr updated c/o Geir Lanesskog - in anticipation of an upcoming Mongoose supplement.
    • Glimmerdrift Reaches updated - in anticipation of an upcoming Mongoose supplement.
    • Kilong provided by Jim Kundert. While still a work in progress (like much of the Two Thousand. Worlds), this plugs the last hole in the classic sectors of Charted Space. Huzzah!
  • M1201 updates for Verge by Kevin Combs
  • M1900 iteration by Rob Eaglestone
  • Some new "Faraway" (non-OTU) sectors:

Lots of other little data tweaks - see the commit log on GitHub if you want to see everything.

Minimal tooling updates:

  • Lots of data validation updates
  • RsO code renders Research Station Omicron
  • A third base glyph (c/o T5 file formats) will now be rendered.
  • Route Maker updates to auto-suggest routes for Zhodani and K'kree worlds. Here's an example - anyone want to take a stab at submitting tidied-up borders for Zho space?

Happy 2023!

Mid-2019 Update

2018 was a bit of a slow year for the site, and a busy year for me, so I didn't end up putting up the usual January post this year. Quick recap of what's happened since Jan 2018:

Data Overview 2018

This year has had ups and downs. Due to real-life distractions I haven't spent as much time on the site as I'd like. But reviewing the change logs, it has been a busy here. Here are some of the highlights....

(Past Overviews)

Data Overview 2018
But first... offline

A highlight of the year was getting to meet and hang out with Marc Miller at TravellerCon/USA:

Joshua Bell and Marc Miller at TravellerCon/USA 2017

He's a big fan of maps, it turns out.

Who knew?

Explorations

Mongoose had a successful Kickstarter for The Great Rift box set by Martin J. Dougherty, which emphasizes getting off the beaten track and exploring the mysteries of even deeper space. The set includes Corridor and Reft, the first look at Riftspan Reaches since a brief stop in Travellers' Digest, and the first ever official look at Afawahisa and Touchstone sectors. In addition, various calibration points and anomalies are marked on those sectors. Prep work was done for these on Traveller Map, including route generation borders, and reviewing previous canonical details.

Athwa subsector in Calidan from The Fall of Tinath adventure (also by MJD) in the Traveller Starter Set by Mongoose was added as well; this is part of the OTU, although resides far away from Charted Space. Watch out for the Essaray...

Graham Donald made an effort to ensure that many apocryphal versions of sectors were preserved. These are not part of the OTU, but used by many players regardless. They include: Fulani from Terra Traveller Times, Meshan from North Coast Roleplaying, Foreven from Imperium Staple, Morning Star (from Morgonstjärnen), Tagret from Judges Guild Pegasus IX, Vanguard Reaches and Beyond by Paranoia Press (1991 updates), Beyond by Jeff Zeitlin, and Precipice and Anniversary, including orphaned worlds and subsectors from various publications

Traveller 5 Sector Survey

We're making some progress on nailing down what the actual process is for reviewing sectors. The image shows the current status: red = complete, orange = in-review (and Foreven = green = preserve).  Not much change since last year, but Arzul and Star's End (by Jeff Zeitlin) were pulled in for review, as well as Touchstone and Afawahisa to support Mongoose's The Great Rift product.

T5SS Status 2018

For sectors already in review, Randy Dorman made corrections for the Solomani sectors in review (Canopus, Aldebaran, Neworld, Langere). Robert Eaglestone updated Tuglikki. Wayne H. Underkoffler made several updates to allegiances in Vanguard Reaches and the Beyond.

Other Efforts

In Zhodani space, Marc Miller has asked that we review unofficial and official data to understand the effects of the Wave, and certain historical events in Zhodani space.

BeRKA updated Zdiedeiant, Michael Gonzalez updated the coreward borders of the Consulate to match the old Imperium Map poster and library data, and I added newly generated data for Sidiadl and Eiaplial sectors, to round out the

Other Eras

M1900: Robert Eaglestone provided Tuglikki updates

M1120: Michael Gonzalez provided data for Core, Dagudashaag, Gushemege, Vland, Deneb, Riftspan Reaches, Corridor, Ealiyasiyw

Non-Data Updates

The bulk of my work on the site this past year was on getting the experience on mobile devices improved. The usual side effect when a web site does that is that the "desktop" experience is improved as well, and I hope that's the case. If you don't visit the site on a phone, here's what it looks like these days:

Data Overview 2017

It's that time of year when look at the current state of the Traveller Map and the changes that happened over the last 12 months. (Past Overviews)

General Updates

Following the passing of Don McKinney just over a year ago a lot of the momentum for the Traveller 5 Second Survey project was lost, but contributors to the site kept iterating on and providing new data. Some of the updates include:

Milieu Support

To assist in the development of the new "Galaxiad" setting set in the far, far future of M1900 I added milieu support. Several developers jumped on the bandwagon to adapt published sectors or placeholders for borders from various eras in the history of Charted Space. The data in most of the milieu is pretty sparse as yet.

I added a few new visualizations, as well as experimental UI to control them.

Finally, towards the end of 2016 we rebooted the Traveller 5 Second Survey effort. Several additional sectors have been brought "In Review" and we've begun to do more cleanup of the data, looking for glitches that have crept it and making progress on the work Don started:

Data Overview 2016

Once a year we look at the current state of the Traveller Map and the changes that happened over the last 12 months.  (Past Overviews)

This year starts on a somber note, having lost some luminaries in the Traveller community, most notably Don McKinney who was heading up the Traveller 5 Second Survey project to produce an official dataset for the OTU. Don was responsible for sending me updates for the official data used on the map, and shepherding data through a review process. The process included dusting off fan-favorite sectors previously considered apocryphal, reviewing submissions by other Traveller writers and referees, and getting feedback after making the preliminary data available via the map. Don will be missed, and the T5SS process will definitely take a bit to get back on track.

Thanks primarily to Don's efforts, 2015 was a year of tremendous growth and refinement in the official dataset. And momentum was started that has continued since his death. I've delayed posting this because there is a lot of work coming down the pipeline, and it's tempting to wait for it to land. But let's get to the picture - or pictures this time, of what's in there now:

Data Overview
The usual round-up of changes in 2015:
It's useful to toggle the "Dim Unofficial Data" setting to see what's in the T5SS review pipeline:
Unofficial Data Dimmed
I've also added a few overlay options to visualize stuff for the T5SS reviewers. Droyne/Chirper world locations:
Droyne Worlds ★ / Chirper Worlds ☆
Populations - the area of the circle is proportional to the population of the world, so you can only really see worlds with 10 billion or more sophonts. The large circle to Trailing is the (possibly apocryphal) Nooq Sphere, with a larger population than many entire sectors. This also shows where unofficial data may need some work:
Population Overlay
And here's an overlay highlighting world Importance (a T5 stat derived from the UWP):
Importance Overlay
One last picture, that compares coverage versus the area from the original Imperium poster:

I'm sure there's more data to come soon, but I need to publish this before January runs out.

Happy 2016!

Data Overview 2016

... is coming soon.

SPOILERS: Despite the sad events of 2015, it's been a huge year for data and there's been a recent influx of data. I'm waiting for it to calm down a bit before posting.

Hang on, travellers...

Otherwise... a quiet year.

Data Overview 2014

Belated "Happy New Year!" - time for the annual data round-up. Past Overviews

Here's what's new since 2013:
  • Adjusted Deneb borders, per T5 Second Survey.
  • Regenerated borders in the Gateway Quadrant
  • Per the T5 Second Survey, polities of only two worlds don't get borders/allegiance, and are simply "owned" worlds. This mostly affected Reavers' Deep, Trojan Reach and Glimmerdrift Reaches
  • All of the Hive Federation fleshed out c/o Mark Humphreys
  • Group One's classic version of Theta Borealis
  • Stiatlchepr by Dale Jenkins
  • Holowon by Brian Smaller and Mikhail by Ed Anderson - both adaptations of personal campaigns
  • Placeholders in K'kree space - maybe we'll get some official data for the Two Thousand Worlds someday? Pretty please?
  • Spangele by 77topaz - although Dale Jenkins sent me a version as well at almost exactly the same time!
Those last two notes should be a reminder: any unofficial data can get paved over or simply removed at any time. While you can always ping me to see if someone is working on a sector, I may not be able to share details in all cases.

Someone remind me again in 2015, okay?

Data Overview 2013

Back in 2009 I promised a yearly update with what was new - data, metadata, and so forth. I suck at remembering to do this, apparently. Someone remind me in 2014, okay?

So here's the update for what's new since the last state-of-the-Imperium update:

  • Filled borders make the map just that much prettier and identify polities
  • Details for a few more sectors around the edges of the rift, c/o 77topaz
  • Routes for the Julian Protectorate, c/o Mike Kuehn
  • Routes for Alpha Crucis, c/o David Pulver
And the biggest set of changes, although they aren't really visible at this level:
  • Scrubbed T5 data for Imperial sectors, c/o Don McKinney and Marc Miller

Data Overview 2009

At the start of 2008 I posted a data overview, showing how much things had changed since 2006. This should probably become a yearly tradition, so here's the official 2009 overview:

Not a whole lot of change. So far as I can tell by doing a "blink compare", at this scale the only differences are:
Anything else I can plug in, dear readers?

(I used TortoiseIDiff to do the blink comparison. I used a similar technique while doing the Solomani and Aslan Dotmap Reconstruction.) Ω

Data Overview, Gushemege Routes, Keyboard Controls

It's time for another look at the map's data/metadata coverage - the last one was back in 2006. Here is a dotmap render at 2 pixels/parsec showing all parsec-level borders and all routes:

Notes:
  • The rendering and encoding pipeline doesn't guarantee a single pixel per world, or even uniform brightness, so the dotmap should not be analyzed too closely - just gauge data density (i.e. "this is a rift" or "there's no data for this sector")
  • This does not include Chtierabl or the Zhodani Core Route which, let's face it, is just a long, mostly straight line.
I've also made two additions:
  • Routes for Gushemege were added based on Traveller 1248 Sourcebook 2: Bearers of the Flame (download sector map in PDF format). I figure the Fourth Imperium xboat routes are probably pretty close to the Third Imperium xboat routes at least within the sector, since the backstory is that Usdiki Pocket fared pretty well. The edges of the sector - outside the 1248 4I borders - have sparse routes.
  • You can now use the I, J, K and L keys to scroll the map as well as + and - to zoom in and out. This only applies to the main map page, not IFRAME embedded versions.
Ω

2006-10-09

How is the metadata coming?

I made a tweak to the renderer to use the "micro-scale" borders at macro-scale to create the above picture, which shows how many borders have been generated so far. My goal is to switch to using the generated borders (sufficiently smoothed and merged with hand-drawn borders) at some point. They'll stay red at the large scale.

I'm actually farther along that it looks - very little of the Hive Federation or 2000 Worlds has been mapped out. There are a few more sectors in the Spinward and Trailing client states that need border generation, and of course the Vargr Extents. Ω
