The set includes <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Corridor" target="_blank">Corridor</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Reft" target="_blank">Reft</a>, the first look at <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Riftspan%20Reaches" target="_blank">Riftspan Reaches</a> since a brief stop in <i>Travellers' Digest</i>, and the first ever official look at <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Afawahisa" target="_blank">Afawahisa</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Touchstone" target="_blank">Touchstone</a> sectors. In addition, various calibration points and anomalies are marked on those sectors. Prep work was done for these on Traveller Map, including route generation borders, and reviewing previous canonical details.<br />
<br />
Athwa subsector in <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Calidan" target="_blank">Calidan</a> from <i><a href="https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/210689/The-Fall-of-Tinath?" target="_blank">The Fall of Tinath</a></i> adventure (also by MJD) in the <i>Traveller Starter Set</i> by Mongoose was added as well; this is part of the OTU, although resides far away from Charted Space. <i>Watch out for the Essaray...</i><br />
<br />
Graham Donald made an effort to ensure that many apocryphal versions of sectors were preserved. These are not part of the OTU, but used by many players regardless. They include: <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Fulani%20(Terra%20Traveller%20Times)" target="_blank">Fulani from Terra Traveller Times</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Meshan%20(North%20Coast%20Roleplaying)" target="_blank">Meshan from North Coast Roleplaying</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Foreven%20(Imperial%20Staple)" target="_blank">Foreven from Imperium Staple</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Morning%20Star" target="_blank">Morning Star (from Morgonstjärnen)</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Tagret" target="_blank">Tagret from Judges Guild <i>Pegasus IX</i></a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Vanguard%20Reaches%20(Paranoia%20Press%201991)" target="_blank">Vanguard Reaches</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/The%20Beyond%20(Paranoia%20Press%201991)" target="_blank">Beyond</a> by Paranoia Press (1991 updates), <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/The%20Beyond%20(Jeff%20Zeitlin)" target="_blank">Beyond by Jeff Zeitlin</a>, and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Precipice" target="_blank">Precipice</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Anniversary" target="_blank">Anniversary</a>, including orphaned worlds and subsectors from various publications<br />

<b>Traveller 5 Sector Survey</b><br />
<br />
We're making some progress on nailing down what the actual process is for reviewing sectors. The image shows the current status: red = complete, orange = in-review (and Foreven = green = preserve). Not much change since last year, but <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Arzul" target="_blank">Arzul</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Star's%20End" target="_blank">Star's End</a> (by Jeff Zeitlin) were pulled in for review, as well as <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Touchstone" target="_blank">Touchstone</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Afawahisa" target="_blank">Afawahisa</a> to support Mongoose's <i>The Great Rift</i> product.<br />

For sectors already in review, Randy Dorman made corrections for the Solomani sectors in review (<a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Canopus" target="_blank">Canopus</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Aldebaran" target="_blank">Aldebaran</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Neworld" target="_blank">Neworld</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Langere" target="_blank">Langere</a>). Robert Eaglestone updated <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Tuglikki" target="_blank">Tuglikki</a>. Wayne H. Underkoffler made several updates to allegiances in <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Vanguard%20Reaches" target="_blank">Vanguard Reaches</a> and the <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Beyond" target="_blank">Beyond</a>.<br />
<br />
<b>Other Efforts</b><br />
<br />
In Zhodani space, Marc Miller has asked that we review unofficial and official data to understand the effects of the Wave, and certain historical events in Zhodani space.<br />
<br />
BeRKA updated <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Zdiedeiant" target="_blank">Zdiedeiant</a>, Michael Gonzalez updated the coreward borders of the Consulate to match the old Imperium Map poster and library data, and I added newly generated data for <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/Sidiadl" target="_blank">Sidiadl</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/Eiaplial" target="_blank">Eiaplial</a> sectors, to round out the<br />
<br />
<b>Other Eras</b><br />
<br />
M1900: Robert Eaglestone provided Tuglikki updates<br />
<br />
M1120: Michael Gonzalez provided data for Core, Dagudashaag, Gushemege, Vland, Deneb, Riftspan Reaches, Corridor, Ealiyasiyw<br />

<b>Non-Data Updates</b><br />

The bulk of my work on the site this past year was on getting the experience on mobile devices improved. The usual side effect when a web site does that is that the "desktop" experience is improved as well, and I hope that's the case. If you don't visit the site on a phone, here's what it looks like these days:<br />

Although everything tested fine locally, apparently one of the included changes introduced a serious bug impacting performance. I haven't tracked down the cause yet, but I've rolled back the code which seems to have helped:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdOdDySDoojgoKuk7nQAFWLWR6MCa7ocdKfeCaX4R4VvcSitiUincfzjyxTibJTsQsau5HitHCi-gw3fkW9trXtzVZHRKd2UzZzFA69cI6JnNUIviF7Zp0u7xl82xeQNJik4g_dg/s1600/Screen+Shot+2017-03-17+at+7.55.47+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdOdDySDoojgoKuk7nQAFWLWR6MCa7ocdKfeCaX4R4VvcSitiUincfzjyxTibJTsQsau5HitHCi-gw3fkW9trXtzVZHRKd2UzZzFA69cI6JnNUIviF7Zp0u7xl82xeQNJik4g_dg/s400/Screen+Shot+2017-03-17+at+7.55.47+AM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
The black line spiking up is CPU usage. Normally it's around 2 minutes per hour (i.e. the host machine is actually sitting idle most of the time). For the last few days it's been around 50 minutes per hour - meaning it's been spinning its wheels like mad. And when it's like that, every request is extremely slow - minutes instead of milliseconds.<br />
<br />
Sorry about that. :(<br />
<br />
It may take some time to track down, and the odds are high that I'll push a bad release or two out while trying to bisect down to the exact bug - and it takes a few minutes of monitoring to even notice that it's occurring. So please be patient.<br />

Following the passing of Don McKinney just over a year ago a lot of the momentum for the Traveller 5 Second Survey project was lost, but contributors to the site kept iterating on and providing new data. Some of the updates include:<br />

<b>Milieu Support</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To assist in the development of the new "Galaxiad" setting set in the far, far future of M1900 I added milieu support. Several developers jumped on the bandwagon to adapt published sectors or placeholders for borders from various eras in the history of Charted Space. The data in most of the milieu is pretty sparse as yet.</div>

Finally, towards the end of 2016 we rebooted the Traveller 5 Second Survey effort. Several additional sectors have been brought "In Review" and we've begun to do more cleanup of the data, looking for glitches that have crept it and making progress on the work Don started:</div>

<br />
After a long break, I can announce some progress on the T5SS effort.<br />
<br />
Marc continues to have a high level mandate to create a stable, consistent data set for the OTU as a tool for authors. This allows him (and others) to e.g. understand the impact of the Wave on charted space from 1105 to 1900, or figure how how the Vilani formed the Ziru Sirka along J-1 mains thousands of years earlier.<br />
<br />
The canonical data set resides in Marc's hands. I've spent time over the last few weeks reconciling it with <a href="https://travellermap.blogspot.com/2015/12/another-t5ss-data-drop-many-new-sectors.html">changes made by DonM between October and December 2015 that never made it back to Marc</a>, as well as a handful of corrections applied directly to the site. We now once again have a consistent basis for the T5SS, and I can resuming make updates to the site from it.<br />
<br />
Over the last few days I tackled three big additions to the T5SS data set. These are all now considered "In Review":<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Randy Dorman's Solomani sectors: <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/cano">Canopus</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/alde">Aldebaran</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/newo">Neworld</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/lang">Langere</a></li>
<li>Jim Kundert's Zhodani sector: <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/tien">Tienspevnekr</a></li>
<li>Jeff Zeitlin's Julian sectors: <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/gash">Gashikan</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/tren">Trenchans</a></li>
</ul>
<br />
Feedback should be directed to the <a href="http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/showthread.php?t=31921" target="_blank">COTI T5SS thread</a>.<br />
<br />Joshua Bellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16877590477046380873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16809467.post-6715964914660914342016-09-17T16:22:00.001-07:002016-09-17T16:22:32.388-07:00Milieu Support<b><i>Traveller</i></b> uses the term milieu (plural: milieux) to describe a particular setting or era. Milieu include the Golden Age (described in <i>Classic Traveller</i> and <i>Mongoose Traveller</i>, circa 1105), the Rebellion (described in <i>MegaTraveller</i>, circa 1120), the New Era (circa 1202, 1248), Milieu 0 (from <i>T4</i>, from 0 through 300), Interstellar Wars (from <i>GURPS Traveller: Interstellar Wars</i>), and even alternate settings such as the GURPS Traveller alternate timeline (a.k.a. "Lorenverse").<br />
<br />
The Traveller Map defaults to the Golden Age (circa 1105), which is the focus of the T5SS effort. It now offers experimental support for other Milieu. To enable it:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Go to the Settings menu (gear)</li>
<li>Check "Enable Experiments"</li>
<li>A new Experiments menu (flask) will appear</li>
<li>From that menu, select a milieu:</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga-ykLaTB6dAXKLvR6n96dCHaxqsUCfmLSTqyH5KPQ4KeUUJnSchCLVRtVkBN2cYh9paGWInRBOR-Kyg6XaVIr4_3arc7MS_z5EBgohdb_78JSiTaBUWN5qireEgIwaFPRonorcw/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-09-17+at+12.52.16+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga-ykLaTB6dAXKLvR6n96dCHaxqsUCfmLSTqyH5KPQ4KeUUJnSchCLVRtVkBN2cYh9paGWInRBOR-Kyg6XaVIr4_3arc7MS_z5EBgohdb_78JSiTaBUWN5qireEgIwaFPRonorcw/s320/Screen+Shot+2016-09-17+at+12.52.16+PM.png" width="311" /></a></div>
<br />
You can play with some other experimental features that are there.<br />
<br />
The available milieux are currently:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The Interstellar Wars - featuring only the <a href="https://travellermap.com/?milieu=IW&x=15.195&y=-107.082&scale=45.2578125&options=41975" target="_blank">Solomani Rim</a> as depicted in <i>GURPS Traveller: Interstellar Wars</i> by Drye, Wiseman and Zeigler. Data adapted by adapted by Dom Mooney</li>
<li>990 - Solomani Rim War. Features the data from <i>Gateway to Destiny</i> (the <a href="https://travellermap.com/?milieu=M990&x=82.591&y=-5.854&scale=11.3125&options=41975" target="_blank">Gateway Domain</a>) which is all I have handy for that time period, from <a href="http://dotclue.org/t20/" target="_blank">Gateway to PDF</a>.</li>
<li>1105 - this is the default, with data from T5SS and unofficial contributions</li>
<li>1900 - the Galaxiad setting. This is a work in progress with just the <a href="https://travellermap.com/?milieu=M1900&x=-92.196&y=71.734&scale=32&options=41975" target="_blank">Spinward Marches and parts of Gvurrdon</a>, c/o Rob Eaglestone.</li>
</ul>
<div>
Submission of data to flesh out these milieux or start others are welcome!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
The <a href="https://travellermap.com/doc/api" target="_blank">API docs</a> are updated to include <b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">milieu</span></b> parameters where supported. Note that the values currently supported are: <b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">IW</span></b>, <b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">M990</span></b>, <b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">M1900</span></b> - and leave the param off for the default. If data is not present for a sector in a given milieu you'll get 404 Not Found errors.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When generating <i>images</i>, placeholder markers (*) will be shown for systems where default (1105) data has a system.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
<br class="Apple-interchange-newline" />There are some caveats with the <i>experimental</i> support:</div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Search does not consider milieux, so the results won't match what you see.</li>
<li>Routes do not consider milieux so those results will also be off, too</li>
</ul>
<div>
There are a few more bugs noted in the <a href="https://github.com/inexorabletash/travellermap/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3A%22Milieu+%28Era%2FATU%29+support%22" target="_blank">issue tracker</a>. Additional bug reports welcome.</div>
</div>

(<a href="https://travellermap.blogspot.com/search/label/overview" target="_blank">Past Overviews</a>)<br />
<br />
This year starts on a somber note, having lost some luminaries in the Traveller community, most notably Don McKinney who was heading up the Traveller 5 Second Survey project to produce an official dataset for the OTU. Don was responsible for sending me updates for the official data used on the map, and shepherding data through a review process. The process included dusting off fan-favorite sectors previously considered apocryphal, reviewing submissions by other Traveller writers and referees, and getting feedback after making the preliminary data available via the map. Don will be missed, and the T5SS process will definitely take a bit to get back on track.<br />
<br />
Thanks primarily to Don's efforts, 2015 was a year of tremendous growth and refinement in the official dataset. And momentum was started that has continued since his death. I've delayed posting this because there is a lot of work coming down the pipeline, and it's tempting to wait for it to land. But let's get to the picture - or <i>pictures </i>this time, of what's in there now:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

The usual round-up of changes in 2015:<br />
<ul>
<li>Cultural Regions/Member States/Reservations called out in the Imperium, Solomani Confederation (work in progress), and Zhodani Consulate (WIP)</li>

<li><a href="https://travellermap.com/go/caes" target="_blank">Caesillian</a> sector (well, one world) by Marc Miller added</li>
<li>Land Grant sectors now under T5SS review: <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/farf" target="_blank">Far Frontiers</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/vang" target="_blank">Vanguard Reaches</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/beyo" target="_blank">The Beyond</a>, and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/thet" target="_blank">Theta Borealis</a></li>
<li>Trailing sectors now under T5SS review: <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/spic" target="_blank">Spica</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/gate" target="_blank">Gateway</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/cruc" target="_blank">Crucis Margin</a></li>
<li>Coreward sectors now under T5SS review: <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/tugl" target="_blank">Tuglikki</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/prov" target="_blank">Provence</a> (David Drazul), <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/wind" target="_blank">Windhorn</a> (John G. Wood), <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/mesh" target="_blank">Meshan</a>, <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/mend" target="_blank">Mendan</a> and <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/amdu" target="_blank">Amdukan</a> (Mike Mikesh)</li>
</ul>
<div>
It's useful to toggle the "Dim Unofficial Data" setting to see what's in the T5SS review pipeline:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggbgmPYHN80-eVoWJLa79uJoWQ9JVKPArfi-fssnf5j7JlMnjMoU9BFOgWpWfbumMciylXSyE8Cb7dOrpnmesJyG8MuzzJZj6S2Ai5FBsSh0pTKQq5T2Lvy-fw5lM-zdSlIWFBCw/s1600/overview2016du.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggbgmPYHN80-eVoWJLa79uJoWQ9JVKPArfi-fssnf5j7JlMnjMoU9BFOgWpWfbumMciylXSyE8Cb7dOrpnmesJyG8MuzzJZj6S2Ai5FBsSh0pTKQq5T2Lvy-fw5lM-zdSlIWFBCw/s320/overview2016du.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Unofficial Data Dimmed</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I've also added a few overlay options to visualize stuff for the T5SS reviewers. Droyne/Chirper world locations:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiomTz732KMROBybei2H1dmo4Db63LhuWTv4LCSkR7S_fY2oxFKq3Dk_tCce_oWgB9TEsntGmiUXLCASN7LhpHvkBjNTdMbULsamqA9HGDWGIZBhxWhaImYhc962QZ-3i0JY9EkWA/s1600/overview2016dw.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiomTz732KMROBybei2H1dmo4Db63LhuWTv4LCSkR7S_fY2oxFKq3Dk_tCce_oWgB9TEsntGmiUXLCASN7LhpHvkBjNTdMbULsamqA9HGDWGIZBhxWhaImYhc962QZ-3i0JY9EkWA/s320/overview2016dw.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Droyne Worlds ★ / Chirper Worlds ☆</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Populations - the area of the circle is proportional to the population of the world, so you can only really see worlds with 10 billion or more sophonts. The large circle to Trailing is the (possibly apocryphal) Nooq Sphere, with a larger population than many entire sectors. This also shows where unofficial data may need some work:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWJJbGC9f8vmgsvpjB33wTFr-wssTG62lp8plBr7NjwOOGmH-DoUP1C5TQ47s6bikIJ2DxBmBT7J_ikijQAccu_Au9WNfbxZdw8Kfl6YKonpvWSsjTbN7AIuWOTtY_uksQRd4amw/s1600/overview2016po.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWJJbGC9f8vmgsvpjB33wTFr-wssTG62lp8plBr7NjwOOGmH-DoUP1C5TQ47s6bikIJ2DxBmBT7J_ikijQAccu_Au9WNfbxZdw8Kfl6YKonpvWSsjTbN7AIuWOTtY_uksQRd4amw/s320/overview2016po.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Population Overlay</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And here's an overlay highlighting world Importance (a T5 stat derived from the UWP):<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-nu5huYlV6SuBAi9KXRN_VvZ4qD2IbmF98bqp2_0my4iFJJQ-ugWo_5uvQpEsp-Zf0L0pWMMumYtocpXAHywpAGPfjKcazvPt8eEWlpcQ_lxdnjUoZtbunAMIyPGoXm7fnOquug/s1600/overview2016im.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-nu5huYlV6SuBAi9KXRN_VvZ4qD2IbmF98bqp2_0my4iFJJQ-ugWo_5uvQpEsp-Zf0L0pWMMumYtocpXAHywpAGPfjKcazvPt8eEWlpcQ_lxdnjUoZtbunAMIyPGoXm7fnOquug/s320/overview2016im.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Importance Overlay</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
One last picture, that compares coverage versus the area from the original Imperium poster:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Charted Space</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I'm sure there's more data to come soon, but I need to publish this before January runs out.<br />
<br />
Happy 2016!<br />

SPOILERS: Despite the sad events of 2015, it's been a huge year for data and there's been a recent influx of data. I'm waiting for it to calm down a bit before posting.<br />

Some data corrections elsewhere as well. <br />
The sector is the home of the <a href="http://www.travellerbibliography.org/ct.html#fasa" target="_blank">FASA adventures</a> such as the Sky Raiders trilogy. The <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/farf/2035" target="_blank">Jungleblut</a> subsector was detailed in <i><a href="http://www.travellerbibliography.org/fasa/Trail.html" target="_blank">Trail of the Sky Raiders</a></i>. The <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/farf/1326" target="_blank">Alsas</a> subsector was detailed by Bill Fawcett in "Privateer", an article in <i>Gameplay</i> magazine. Dale Kemper produced a manuscript including these details and fleshing out the rest of the rimward half of the sector as a manuscript intended for publication by FASA, but it didn't make it to print before FASA ended support for Traveller. It was later published (with minor changes) in <a href="https://archive.org/details/AresMagazineSpecialEdition2" target="_blank">ARES Magazine Special Edition #2</a>, and republished in <i>The Traveller Chronicle</i>, issues 2 through 4.<br />
<br />
The sector is called Afachtiabr by the Zhodani who dominate the coreward half, which was detailed by James "GypsyComet" Kundert and published in <i>The Traveller Chronicle</i>, issues 5 through 8.<br />
<br />
Art Gorski has put together a comprehensive <a href="http://rpggeek.com/geeklist/142617/atlas-third-imperium-far-frontiers" target="_blank">list of references to the Far Frontiers sector</a> over at RPGGeek. The biggest change in the T5SS version from earlier visits to the sector is that the Zhodani's Colonnade Administrative District is now known as the Colonnade Province of the Zhodani Consulate. This region extends into the neighboring <a href="https://travellermap.com/go/beyo" target="_blank">Beyond</a> sector, also in review by the T5SS.<br />
<br />
Issues and feedback appreciated here, or on <a href="http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/showthread.php?t=34344" target="_blank">COTI</a>.<br />

How long does it take to get from Regina (SPIN 1910) to Woochiers (SPIN 2207) at Jump-1? A long, long time:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCRnE3W8QybfYXH0uFkNgQZfG6JzVP6bXBtxEas-XwWCXK-_-Dj6rMUxIpvN6FCzszfTWpkFcDVXDYcyIzezos99-g5zFGuzHjB9zRSlUuqmuYpV0xW5PBXNeDJPGJDhQoKukYmg/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-09-04+at+9.21.38+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCRnE3W8QybfYXH0uFkNgQZfG6JzVP6bXBtxEas-XwWCXK-_-Dj6rMUxIpvN6FCzszfTWpkFcDVXDYcyIzezos99-g5zFGuzHjB9zRSlUuqmuYpV0xW5PBXNeDJPGJDhQoKukYmg/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-09-04+at+9.21.38+AM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I've added a route finding feature. Hit the route button to the right of the search box.<br />
<ul>
<li>Start/end location can be entered as <i>Sector Hex</i>, e.g. <span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Spinward Marches 1910</span></li>
<ul>
<li>T5SS sector abbreviations are okay: <span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">SPIN 1910</span> works too</li>
</ul>
<li>Otherwise, the map uses the nearest matching world name. So you can plug in <span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Regina</span> and <span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Woochiers</span> (but it might get confused if there are duplicate world names)</li>
</ul>
Caveats:<br />
<ul>
<li>Not usable on mobile-sized screens yet</li>
<li>Can't click/tap to set locations</li>
<li>Can't filter route (e.g. only wilderness refueling, no red zones, prefer Im)</li>
</ul>
<div>
But even given that, it's still fun. Here's Regina to Terra at J-4:<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8AjZtLmSKR0I0phkn0TeCK4OrNWS72_yGSfwn5iPRaPzn8-pTDCdGtZqJ2kd0H5dCpgM5yjl0tzC6nK5q7U-VnTJUA1ZydNv2Af5E32OgaIeCvaf5B5Xy48b9oNaj-M-sn06FTg/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-09-04+at+9.28.13+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8AjZtLmSKR0I0phkn0TeCK4OrNWS72_yGSfwn5iPRaPzn8-pTDCdGtZqJ2kd0H5dCpgM5yjl0tzC6nK5q7U-VnTJUA1ZydNv2Af5E32OgaIeCvaf5B5Xy48b9oNaj-M-sn06FTg/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-09-04+at+9.28.13+AM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>

I also fixed some routing bugs in <a href="http://travellermap.com/make/path" target="_blank">Path Finder</a> but that utility is now considered deprecated and no longer linked from the main page. I'll keep it around as it allows route calculations in custom sectors, but it probably won't get more love.<br />

Ten years ago today, back when dinosaurs roamed the Internet, I made a post to the Traveller Mailing List announcing an online interactive map of the <i>Official Traveller Universe</i>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://tml.travellerrpg.narkive.com/7rVE3XSg/hello-tml">http://tml.travellerrpg.narkive.com/7rVE3XSg/hello-tml</a></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="clear: both;">
<i>I popped by http://jtas.net/travelleratlas/ and thought "cool!" at first, then realized that most of the maps had been generated by hand. Aaaaaaah! That just makes my teeth hurt with sympathy pain. Also, Google Maps had just gone beta, and I found a copy of GURPS Traveller at Half Price Books (which features the Imperium Map in a "console" frame) to I created a conceptual blend of all of the above: </i></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="clear: both;">
<i>http://inexorabletash.members.winisp.net/maps/map.htm</i></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>I've tested in IE6 and Firefox (so it should work with the latest Netscape/Mozilla browsers). Click and drag in the map, zoom in, go wild. You'll need a decent 'net connection. Note that it's generating all of the tile images on the fly, so I hope it can relieve some of the tedium of maintaining projects like the one at jtas.net. </i></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>(If you're curious, it's a tiny C# ASP.NET app with less than 1400 lines of code. There's a "readme" on the site with other details. And yes, I've fired off the requisite mail to Marc.)</i></blockquote>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At that point I didn't even have a domain registered, but the site was functional enough to invite others to take a look. As I've written before, I was inspired by this mockup in <i>GURPS Traveller</i>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii1-fCRNXDKtVVv6JimqatLwq5tLXcjI72B-jQy1ELDRjcut0kZGn4W4sPazsh1IJcIh6R5FKaouTkV2JZNTDuulNW69POs_qKaSu1J6RPyvLqtHQH-ISaAcoSsUH5xrtxA-JeJQ/s1600/GURPS+Traveller+Map.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii1-fCRNXDKtVVv6JimqatLwq5tLXcjI72B-jQy1ELDRjcut0kZGn4W4sPazsh1IJcIh6R5FKaouTkV2JZNTDuulNW69POs_qKaSu1J6RPyvLqtHQH-ISaAcoSsUH5xrtxA-JeJQ/s1600/GURPS+Traveller+Map.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course, it was also inspired by Google Maps, which hit the 'net in February 2005 - a mere two months earlier! I really should have kept photos of the earlier versions of my site... but it turns out that you can still run old versions via the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20060712083431/http://www.travellermap.com/" target="_blank">Internet Archive's Wayback Machine</a>. Here's how it looked circa 2006:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI460fKP6A79cxlK3wCuhVmcmYw209MFXGhKnlQ8djjKXLGVgqgLhV0qy7HUmwNXe5_jfymMLV-tAhv6QiIm5PbUijvHzy6UKzeWIEM0miQiKEq-M6J2VPMM29tAVU5qs7I4Xg_Q/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-04-22+at+7.55.23+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI460fKP6A79cxlK3wCuhVmcmYw209MFXGhKnlQ8djjKXLGVgqgLhV0qy7HUmwNXe5_jfymMLV-tAhv6QiIm5PbUijvHzy6UKzeWIEM0miQiKEq-M6J2VPMM29tAVU5qs7I4Xg_Q/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-04-22+at+7.55.23+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At one point I even made sure the site worked under Netscape 7.2 running on Windows 98 (via a virtual machine):</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I made a slight tweak to the way routes are rendered.<br />
<br />
Old:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMbQIiy2JFKwgGsM65SsfQXHncm_pgo-ToW-xVynjlvfW3MBG5EcZN-ryB169mIir0Ag22XygOIFcCYpIXOZ3POgRsup3idmtEml2AvzQpY97t4D8R0sCD5EPrsLKHYdGploy7BA/s1600/old.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMbQIiy2JFKwgGsM65SsfQXHncm_pgo-ToW-xVynjlvfW3MBG5EcZN-ryB169mIir0Ag22XygOIFcCYpIXOZ3POgRsup3idmtEml2AvzQpY97t4D8R0sCD5EPrsLKHYdGploy7BA/s1600/old.png" /></a></div>
<br /><span id="goog_1716787636"></span>
New:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKdPN6oUTfJzR1eW7BGuKkp-bKfUXUAlfHXwexwPTuUykT-9b09epzV350_cPTHGnDNrZfUhu9bDN_7oMTlcnqMokCCQiY8pp2T2alB3nIwbAWozLh-QtMuZti0p1Kenojt1VUyQ/s1600/new.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKdPN6oUTfJzR1eW7BGuKkp-bKfUXUAlfHXwexwPTuUykT-9b09epzV350_cPTHGnDNrZfUhu9bDN_7oMTlcnqMokCCQiY8pp2T2alB3nIwbAWozLh-QtMuZti0p1Kenojt1VUyQ/s1600/new.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Look closely at how the routes intersect the world disc. Previously they came extremely close. So close, in fact, that they actually are drawn first - right to the center of the world! Then the world is rendered by painting over the routes with the background color, then the world itself renders. Now, the routes are rendered with the endpoints offset slightly from the world. Which is closer to how a human would draw the routes, and matches classic work like posters and LBBs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made the change to improve the rendering when a background was present, like these cases:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Old:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju_8JQMj0uIXGAx2rTrYVVXORhga22Y0ZEdpFjWgrCfNju6MakgnNm54tOfVLvxxx0Dsk4Wfx-EWfBrUkKupsDWzRtP0vIksvt_L98Ccdfpp0nL_LiDFh09JTYP0u8RkjUE2sIeQ/s1600/old2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju_8JQMj0uIXGAx2rTrYVVXORhga22Y0ZEdpFjWgrCfNju6MakgnNm54tOfVLvxxx0Dsk4Wfx-EWfBrUkKupsDWzRtP0vIksvt_L98Ccdfpp0nL_LiDFh09JTYP0u8RkjUE2sIeQ/s1600/old2.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
New:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCwN89AGkV6kpkdcJ7l9tiZlWXI9Mz5ZB9k9FPpIwITaivTi7ZOlZlowZSXp6x7nZ6seO8eB29hGE7JaT5Rf7IZZJGI-DmEkIKEAuTjMx_o8DhcPEQDFqHsnGZXp-Muoo9IUC8bQ/s1600/new2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCwN89AGkV6kpkdcJ7l9tiZlWXI9Mz5ZB9k9FPpIwITaivTi7ZOlZlowZSXp6x7nZ6seO8eB29hGE7JaT5Rf7IZZJGI-DmEkIKEAuTjMx_o8DhcPEQDFqHsnGZXp-Muoo9IUC8bQ/s1600/new2.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Note how in "old" the routes intersect the world, whereas in "new" the routes don't. This was never a big deal, but I'm experimenting with rendering styles where backgrounds are more important.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't normally announce such subtle tweaks in rendering, so why even bring this up? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There may be places in the data where routes actually go right through other worlds. Here's an example in Deneb:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQNeFLrfXbqJAOeouHJICXDAozAfFwMKhEVl6fXZTW4KmmVKvBYEXeH0YCF_-fIGUqjxSDMtEBCPDZ5wgv2ZHYpQa3-sdDPjaQMUcPhgGPWOcuDpFGVc7Y2oB0iV-2nX9DN9Tagw/s1600/image-2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQNeFLrfXbqJAOeouHJICXDAozAfFwMKhEVl6fXZTW4KmmVKvBYEXeH0YCF_-fIGUqjxSDMtEBCPDZ5wgv2ZHYpQa3-sdDPjaQMUcPhgGPWOcuDpFGVc7Y2oB0iV-2nX9DN9Tagw/s1600/image-2.png" height="320" width="220" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you look at Unxava, Sorel, or Ibsen you can see that the route doesn't stop at those worlds. Previously, the painting over with the background color would have meant the route line and the world disc would never touch. You also wouldn't have been able to tell if the X-boat route from Dawn to Zeng was one J-4 or four J-1s. This new way of rendering distinguishes the two cases, although it doesn't look quite as pretty.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(Aside: hand-curated sectors like the Spinward Marches would avoid putting a route across other worlds like this, because a key factor in creating X-boat routes is <i>looking good</i>. The routes exist primarily to add visual interest to the maps, rather than convey important data. The notion of communication routes impacting gameplay by allowing players to "race the news" was a later innovation.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There may be cases where a route <i>should</i> be broken up. When transcribing routes from print I may have made incorrect assumptions. If you spot any such anomalies, please let me know.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Other tidbits from the drop:</div>
<ul>
<li>Hive Federation now has T5SS allegiance code: HvFd</li>
<li>Embassies have have base code E</li>
<li>Base code X, previously reserved for Zhodani Relay Station, is slated to be replaced by W, which will indicate any Way Station, not just an Imperial Scout Way Station. That's not entirely reflected in the data yet.</li>
</ul>

Enjoy!</div>

<ul>
<li><b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><a href="http://travellermap.com/?q=t*%20in:%22Solomani%20Rim%22" target="_blank">t* in:"Solomani Rim"</a></span></b> - find worlds starting with T in the Solomani Rim</li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><b><a href="http://travellermap.com/?q=reg*%20in:spin" target="_blank">reg* in:spin</a></b></span> - find worlds starting with REG in the Spinward Marches</li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><b><a href="http://travellermap.com/?q=uwp:*-F%20in:Deneb" target="_blank">uwp:*-F in:Deneb</a></b></span> - find Tech Level 15 worlds in Deneb sector</li>
</ul>
<div>
Use quotes for sector names with spaces, but the sector name match is a prefix match so an abbreviation (spin, solo, troj, etc) will work too.</div>

<i>(Note: that's 'https' as in 'secure', and no 'www')</i><br />
<br />
Not that the site stores any user data, but this (in theory) means that any data you post for rendering using the various tools can't be observed or modified by malicious network denizens thanks to end-to-end encryption. And if someone hijacks the site you'll get a certificate warning.<br />
<br />
This may not work in really, really old operating systems like Windows XP, so I'm not going to redirect http requests to https for a bit. On the flip side, modern browsers are pretty strict about trusted sites including non-trusted content, so some random stuff may fail, so please give it a whirl and let me know if you see any glitches.Joshua Bellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16877590477046380873noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16809467.post-84020128955531856382014-11-22T22:51:00.001-08:002014-11-22T22:51:14.581-08:00Metadata DocA long time coming, but I finally wrote up slightly more human readable definition of the XML metadata format.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://travellermap.com/doc/metadata">http://travellermap.com/doc/metadata</a><br />
<br />
It doesn't explain everything, but should cover everything you actually need: borders, routes, allegiances, subsectors, labels, stylesheets, etc.<br />

Prior to the move the rendering of text like world names was precise and very legible. Now... some letters are a bit anemic in places. I<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">t's only notable for text like world names, when portions of a letter like "E" may be only a single pixel wide. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">ClearType: poor letter shaping, better legibility</td></tr>

</div>
</div>
<br /></div>
Text rendering is hard. Go read <a href="http://www.rastertragedy.com/" target="_blank">http://www.rastertragedy.com</a> for the gruesome details. I rely entirely on the APIs provided by .NET for it, which relies on Windows support. There are plenty of <a href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ssazt6bs(v=vs.110).aspx" target="_blank">options available for providing hints to the text rendering</a>, and I use "antialias" which basically means rendering character glyphs as vectors and not getting too fancy with reshaping letters to improve legibility of text. That's great for images and lousy for swaths of text (like a web page or ebook), and the text may be a little fuzzy but the size and placement are exact.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Unfortunately, it looks like the "cloud" machines now hosting the site are not doing it the same way as the prior hosts. My guess is that there was GPU rendering on the old provider and without that a fast/dirty CPU fallback is used.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I tried changing hints, and some do improve the legibility of some text but makes other text far worse and pixelated. And even the "improved" text is... well, it doesn't look as elegant. *sigh*</div>

<div>
The good news is that if you're using a device with a high density ("retina") display, the problem doesn't appear since there are four times as many pixels for the renderer to play with, and that's the way of the future. It also doesn't affect print (PDF) output. </div>

<br />
I'll keep tracking this issue and see if I can improve things. I may be able to selectively tweak the output (e.g. only for world details, if low-DPI, etc). I'll also ping the hosting provider. </div>
